Icelandic Lumpfish Take the Stage: Roe Season Hits a Northern High

A huge star
A huge star we need to get going this month is lumpfish roe!!!
First, let’s touch on the cold winter weather that has just left us. That kind of persistent cold always comes from the east, and in the good old days — when winter was something you could rely on — there were often long stretches of easterly winds. That kind of weather meant lumpfish weather!! It was almost like clockwork. When the wind turned east, we knew the lumpfish would come pouring in the next day.
It’s interesting to wonder whether the protection of lumpfish might mean there will be plenty of them in the years ahead. We certainly hope so!!
It’s only a few years ago that here at Fiskerikajen we spent most of February and March talking with our wonderful customers about lumpfish roe.
Not Danish, but Icelandic
We don’t have Danish lumpfish roe — but we do have Icelandic. And since it generally arrives later than the Danish one, we’re now approaching peak season!!
The Icelandic fishery is far better regulated than the Danish one, which is why the Icelandic lumpfish stock is in much better shape.
So don’t hold back — go all in on the North’s caviar all month long!!
